No more sleeping on his own

Akshay has decided sleeping on his own was just for NICU. Now that he is home, he prefers and in fact in many cases will not sleep more than a few minutes without sleeping on one of our chests. He seems to like sleeping directly over the heart probably going back to his womb days.

The poor guy has been prescribed a dosage of iron and multi-vitamin mixed with milk. The usually yellowy tinted milk is turned into what most looks like algae, quite gross but he manages well.

I hope to get some new pictures up shortly.

Still chugging along

Akshay is eating more and more each feeding he ate 70 mls earlier today.

He is currently weighing a little over 5 pounds.

His face is filling in, looking like a little chunk.

He's a 5 pounder!!

Just got off the phone with the nurse, Akshay is now 5 pounds .2 ounces. Not a huge gain but still over the 5 pound mark.

As you can see in his photo he is thinking if he should drink from the breast or bottle. Each has its advantages but usually Mom wins out and he gets it from the source.

We thought he might have caught a cold but he is apparently like his daddy and has "natural" congestion.

He is still eating a ton and is still on track for Wednesday homecoming.

Almost There

Akshay is up to 4 pounds 15.9 ounces. So close to the 5 pound mark.

He is eating 68+ ml per feeding and a few of the feedings directly from MOM.

He sounds like he is congested but the nurses sya he is fine. We will hope that it is nothing and we get to take him home Wednesday.

False Alarm - Not Coming Home Yet

We went to go pick-up Akshay this morning to find out that he has been held over for another 5-7 days. He had a Brady while sleeping, which means he has Apnea. This is normal in kiddos his age and is no cause for alarm but they insist on keeping him longer when it happens to make sure there isn't a larger problem.

This news along with some issues with staffing made today and not so pleasant day.

Didn't get any details on weight but he was doing well and ate a TON!!

Over 4 lbs

Akshay is over 4 pounds, 4 lbs 3.5 oz.

He is eating more and more from the bottle and less through his nose, good sign.

Here is a pic from today. I will post more from a recent visit from Tia Silvia and earlier from my mother's cell phone.

All he wants is snuggles

Akshay's current Height is 43 cm or 16.93 inches and Weight is 3 lbs 15 oz.

Vatsala has been doing skin-to-skin with Akshay and when she tries to take him out of her shirt he gets real mad. The pic of the day is the look she gets when taking him out.

CPR class is scheduled for 12/3/09 which usually means he will be coming home within a week or two after this class. A Christmas at home is looking better.

Eating from a Bottle

May seem like a small accomplishment but one of the goals to come home is to eat from a bottle or the boob. The doctors weren't sure if he had his ability to swallow yet or not but he had signs that he might. They tried today and he was able to eat 25 mls from a bottle and only needed an additional 5 ml through his "nose tube".

He is now weighing 3 lbs 13 ounces and will get his height measured tomorrow.

Still no update on when we can take him home but passed another hurdle.

Random Pics from Cell Phone

Unfortunately it is easiest to snap pics from our cell phones in the NICU so many of the pics will be just cell camera pics. here are a few

The birth of Akshay Jordan Gaylor and current status

On November 11th, Veteran's Day, @ 12:10 AM, Akshay Jordan Gaylor decided it was time to come into the world. He tried to come on November 7th but the doctors were able to stop him until they could get his lungs matured. He weighed in @ 3 pounds and 5 ounces and was 40 cm (roughly 15.75 inches). He was only 31 weeks and 4 days, so he went straight to the NICU @ Mercy San Juan, where he was born.

The doctors have no known cause for his early arrival, Mommy was not a high risk candidate and she was not on any medications or herbs that would cause premature labor. The doctors stated there was nothing she could or could not do to prevent her water from breaking which happened on November 7th.

As of today 11/20/2009, he is weighing in @ 3 pounds and 9 ounces. He is currently being monitored as most babies his size/age but is not on any breathing assistance or nutrient assistance. He is still a little young for normal feeding so he is being fed breastmilk through a tube in his nose.

At this time we are hoping for a Holiday arrival to our home but have not been told anything but expect him home by his expected birthdate, Jan 8th, 2010.

We will keep everyone posted on his status here and will post pictures as soon as I get them from Akshay's Grandma.
